Premolar Bear Tooth Collection

The NCBHA asks all hunters to resume collecting teeth from bears that they harvest. Please submit both first premolars from the upper jaw. They are the very small teeth immediately behind the upper canine tooth (see drawing). Following are instructions for pulling bear teeth:

  1. Use a screwdriver, ice pick, or knife blade to push the gum down and away from the tooth.
  2. Pull the tooth out with pliers or pry it out using the canine as a lever.
  3. Do not break the tooth off at the gum line. It is important that the whole tooth is removed and sent in.
  4. Put the tooth in an envelope and seal it.
  5. Fill in the datasheet and include your address if you want us to send the age of the bear to you.
  6. Contact wildlife personnel at the end of the season to make arrangements for all teeth to be collected.
